Laetitia Gendre

Laetitia Gendre dessine, de façon continue, à la fois réfléchie et compulsive et dans une pratique du médium qui est souvent à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines, flirtant volontiers avec la dimension performative et se concrétisant souvent dans des propositions sculpturales, voire architecturales, qui parlent d’espace, l’investissent, tout en l’attaquant, le dilatant ou le démultipliant. Gendre vise l’efficacité et la simplicité des moyens pour un message tout aussi efficace. Elle se méfie donc de la virtuosité qui distrairait les spectateurs de son propos. Parmi les nombreuses thématiques sociétales qui sous‑tendent ses propositions, citons en particulier les questions de la violence structurelle ou de la surveillance.

L’installation Meta que nous présentons ici se déploie au départ d’un protocole in the making de création de dessins au graphite sur papier A4. La ligne est claire, précise abordant de façon libre et surprenante une multitude de problématiques contemporaines comme autant de points de départ d’associations pleines d’onirisme et de surprises. La série devrait se terminer quand le chiffre de 500 aurait été atteint. En l’occurrence, 5 blocs de 60 scans imprimés de ces dessins ont été reliés. Chaque visiteur est invité, s’il le souhaite, à détacher et emporter un des dessins de ces blocs, interagissant ainsi directement sur l’apparence de l’installation, qui prendra donc potentiellement autant de formes combinatoires possibles qu’il y aura de visiteurs.

Laetitia Gendre draws, in a continuous way, in a way that is both contemplative and compulsive, and in a practice of the medium that is often at the crossroads of several disciplines, flirting willingly with the performative dimension and often materializing in sculptural or even architectural forms which refer to space, investing it, while attacking, expanding or multiplying it. Gendre aims for efficiency and simplicity of means in order to convey an equally effective message. She is therefore wary of virtuosity which would distract viewers from her point. Among the many societal themes underlying her works, we can cite in particular the issues of structural violence or surveillance.

The installation Meta that we are presenting here is based on a protocol in the making for creating graphite drawings on A4 paper. The line is clear, precise, tackling in a free and surprising way a multitude of contemporary issues as starting points for associations full of dreamlike associations and surprises.  The series will end when the figure of 500 has been reached. In this case, 5 blocks of 60 printed scans of these designs have been bound. Each visitor is invited, if they wish, to detach and take away one of the drawings from these blocks, thus interacting directly with the appearance of the installation, which will therefore potentially take on as many combinatorial forms as there will be visitors.
